A BUTTERFLY WITH A WRINKLED WING

BY, AUTHOR, POET, EDUCATOR

 CRAIG E. BURGESS

My friends say that I'm handicapped

          because I'm not like they.

They flutter off when I come near,

and with them I can't play.

But there is nothing wrong with me;

           there's just one minor thing:

I am a tiger swallowtail

           who has a wrinkled wing.

I fly as high and far as they,

           and pollinate as well...

But that one blemish on my wing does

            more than words can tell:

It labels me as something weird

            which doesn't fit the 'mold'...

And thus I'm forced to fly alone,

through skies both warm and cold.

I know they'll never understand what damage they have done

by choosing not to play with me...for they just think it's fun!

If only I could make them see that beauty is 'wing deep',

while talent and ability are traits we ALL can reap.

But I'll not let them get me down and make me feel ashamed.

I'll simply work much harder to prove that I'm NOT maimed!

For  I'm as good and strong as they, unique in just one thing:

I am that tiger swallowtail who has a wrinkled wing.

 THE ENVIOUS  BUTTERFLY

BY, POET, PUBLISHER, AUTHOR,

ELLA DILLON

There he goes, that butterfly who has the wrinkled wing!

I've heard of him in legends and the songs that people sing-

His wing is aerodynamic and adds miles to his flight,

So supple and so graceful.

what a wondrous sight!!

I've secretly admired him, for oh, so many years.

I''ve longed so to meet him, and I've cried many tears.

I know he'd never notice me and so I sit and pine

all because I was born with symmetry of design.

In my dreams I fly with him far up in the sky

doing aerobatics diving low and soaring high.

I've even thought of surgery to wrinkle up one wing

to immitate my idle...this great butterfly king!!

If I could only be like him

instead of being plain

I know that I'd be happy and

suffer no more pain.

Then I would be noticed,

and of me they would sing.

If I were just that butterfly who has a wrinkled wing.
